The efforts of removing pollutants from the environment have been unable to keep pace with the increasing amount of waste materials and the growing population that further aggravates the situation.
This has often resulted in the transformation of small canals, lakes and in some case rivers as well as coastal water into sewage depots. The adverse effects of waste materials become acute in inland water systems due to their traditional role as receiving bodies for effluent.
